A MAHOGANY LONGCASE CLOCK, JAMES CHATER, LONDON, CIRCA 1775.

12-inch silvered dial with gilt rococo spandrels, with date aperture and seconds dial, strike/silent dial, inset arch signed James Chater, London , the domed caddy top hood with broken-arch moulded cornice and brass ball and spire finials, brass fluted hood pillars, the trunk with arched door & panelled plinth with shaped apron Height: 92.25 inches James Chater b.circa.1704 James Chater was apprenticed in 1718, became a member of the Clockmaker's Company in 1727. He was in partnership with his son from 1754 onwards, when work was also signed James Chater & Son. Their business was at 3 Cherry Tree Court, Aldersgate.
