Description:

Fine Pair of Early 19th Century Globes

A very fine pair of 19th Century Newtons terrestrial and celestial globes by Newton, Son & Berry of Chancery Lane, London. Published January 1st 1836

Each globe with horizon rings and brass meridians, mounted on an elegant mahogany stand with reeded and turned column support to three splayed legs united by stretchers set with a compass. The spheres are in excellent condition with Newtons New and Improved paper recalculated in 1830 by W. Newton. The company was started by John Newton (1759–1844), who had trained under another prominent globe maker. The firm saw several name changes as family members joined or left the business:

J. & W. Newton: In the early 1800s, John's son William joined, and the company traded under this name.

Newton, Son & Berry: For a decade beginning in 1831, the company included civil engineer Miles Berry. Newton & Son: The name changed again after 1841 when ownership passed to William's eldest son, William Edward Newton.

Terrestrial globes: These depicted the Earth's continents, oceans, and recent explorations of the time.

Celestial globes: These showed the positions of stars, nebulae, and constellations, with the star data often recalculated for a specific year. It was customary to update globes with the latest discoveries and stars by applying new papers as soon as they were published.

Provenance: Inscribed on brass collars:

From the estate of Lucy Martin Donnelly, a gift from Edith Finch.

Lucy Martin Donnelly (September 18, 1870 – August 3, 1948) was a teacher of English at Bryn Mawr College, Pennsylvania USA. She was head of the English department starting in 1914. Edith Finch (b.1900) was the former wife of Betrand Russell.
