Description:
A BARR FLIGHT AND BARR WORCESTER CANDLESTICK, CIRCA 1815.
A rare and highly decorative candlestick modelled with a gilded sphynx reclining on a rectangular plinth. The marbled sconce is mounted on its back, its pointed wings curled back to support the 'jewelled' rim. The top of the plinth with corresponding marbling, & with fluted columns at each corner picked out in gold. Finely painted on one side with a landscape of Bickleigh Vale nr Plymouth, while the other sides are adorned with neoclassical decoration en grisaille, creating a subtle contrast.
The sphynx a favoured neoclassical motif reflects the Recency fascination with antiquity and mythological forms. The addition of a topographical landscape demonstrates the broader taste for finely painted English views.
