Description:

A FINE GARNITURE OF THREE SPODE POCELAIN POT-POURRI VASES AND COVERS, CIRCA 1825. Painted Spode marks in upper and lower case, of ‘beaded scent jar’ shape, painted with flowers within rectangular gilt-band cartouches, the reverses with green and gilt arabesques, the scrolling gilt handles with foliate terminals, the high domed covers with pierced apertures and gilt anthemion below gilt cone finials, the central vase 20.5cm high, the flanking vases 15.3cm high.

Provenance: With Stoner and Evans, King Street, London, purchased in April 1923 for £21. Leonard Daneham Cunliffe, Trelissick House, Truro, and by descent, The Contents of Trelissick House including the Copeland China Collection sale, Bonhams; 23 July 2013, lot 539.

Exhibited: London, Royal Academy, ‘Spode Bicentenary Exhibition’, 1970, no. 238 (paper label in central Spode vase). Literature: Leonard Whiter, Spode, 1970, pl. 210 (one of these vases).
