Description:
A RARE & FINE BRASS & IRON FOOTMAN, CIRCA 1750
Of serpentine form with draped spiral supports and exaggerated cabriole legs, the top engraved and pierced with a lion and unicorn together with musical instruments, the frieze with elaborate scrolls and drapery with a central engraved armorial shield. Plates could be warmed on the iron bars below. The use of the lion & unicorn (symbols of the United Kingdom) the Irish harp and the lute (often used for entertaining royalty and the court) suggest that this was made for a government official or a courthouse. A similar example is in the collection of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation Virginia USA.
