Description:
AN EARLY GRAINGER & CO. WORCESTER MUG, CIRCA 1810. Of cylindrical shape, the deep blue ground with marble gilt (cailloute). The front circular gilt edged panel with a sporting dog running in moorland. Grainger & Co Worcester Warranted in red script. Illustrated by John Sandon, Worcester Porcelain (2009), p.22. Thomas Grainger and John Wood were both trained as painters at Chamberlain before setting up on their own as manufacturers. The decoration of this mug is very much in the Chamberlain tradition and is quite likely to be the work of either John Wood or Thomas Grainger themselves, acting as enamellers in their own factory.
