Description:
A FINE PAIR OF 18TH CENTURY OLD SHEFFIELD PLATE SILVER CARYATID CANDLESTICKS, CIRCA 1760. From the First Period of old Sheffield Plate manufacture, this rare pair of figural candlesticks reflect the rococo period of silver design with quite florid decoration. Each with a draped maiden holding aloft an urn shaped single candle light. These are very rare examples of early die work and could be as early in date as 1750. Single examples are shown in both Bradbury’s History of Old Sheffield Plate p.229, and Gordon Crosskey, Old Sheffield Plate, p.26, pl.20.
