A FINE PAIR OF GEORGE III PATINATED BRONZE & ORMOLU “GRIFFIN” CANDLESTICKS ENGLISH, CIRCA 1790.
Each in the form of a winged griffin supporting a leaf cast candleholder and drip pan on its head, united by a scrolling foliate support, and on a stepped two tier white marble base further decorated with ormolu chasing. Since classical antiquity, griffins (head and wings of an eagle and body of a lion) were known for guarding treasures and priceless possessions.
