Description:
Fine Regency Rosewood & Brass-Inlaid Side Cabinet Attributed to Gillow of Lancaster. English, circa 1815.
The cabinet of inverted breakfront design, with a Verde Tinos marble top above four brass inlaid doors divided by Doric columns each with a chased gilt-metal capital and base and further brass inlaid panels to the frieze.
The cabinet is amongst a group of pieces that all include the same brass inlay. These include a desk at Hackwood Park, a cabinet illustrated in "Gillows of London & Lancaster" and the bookcases at Tatton Park. The Hackwood desk was supplied by Gillow to William Powlett, second Baron Bolton for Hackwood and is mentioned in the Gillows Memorandum dated 1813.
The cabinet which has no stamp or provenance is attributed to Gillow on stylistic grounds by Susan Stuart, the leading authority on Gillow. Her suggestion s that the brass work is by Louis le Gaigneur, a French cabinet maker who owned the Buhl manufactory at 19 Queen St, London and supplied furniture to the Prince Regent for Carlton House.
