A Set of Six Imperial Capacity Measures

For Northallerton, Yorkshire, 1825

A rare and complete set of six Imperial capacity measures, each inscribed in script and numbered Set No. 1224. Produced following the introduction of the Imperial system of weights and measures in 1824, the set would have been used to ensure uniform standards in trade and commerce.

The set comprises:

  • Imperial Gallon with straight handles
  • Imperial Half Gallon
  • Imperial Quart
  • Imperial Half Pint
  • Imperial Gill (dated 1858)
  • Imperial Half Gill

An important surviving provincial set, illustrating the standardisation of British measures during the early 19th century and reflecting the essential role of officially verified measures in everyday commercial life.
