A PAIR OF BLUE JOHN URNS, ENGLISH CIRCA 1780
Pair of George III Blue John Urns raised on square plinths:
the urns of neoclassical campana shaped form on a waisted socle and fixed, waisted top covers and finials; the plinths of Blue John with cornices of English alabaster above and below, and raised on a black marble square plinth, raised on stepped gilded metal bases with square and bun feet. Discovered by the Romans over 2000 years ago Blue John as Derbyshire Fluor-Spar, is a rare, crystalline semi-precious gemstone unique to a single mine at Castleton, Derbyshire, and much admired and highly desired for its decorative value in the 18th Century.
