Oyster Catchers Off Sheerness. William CALLCOTT KNELL b.1830-1880

Description: Oyster Catchers Off Sheerness William CALLCOTT KNELL b.1830-1880 Oil on Canvas, Signed & Dated 1862 on Reverse. 49.5ins x 29.75ins William Callcott Knell was a British painter of maritime subjects. He painted mainly coastal scenes with boats. With great skill, Knell managed to capture the changing ambiances of the day and render his impressions of nature. Callcott Knell is renowned for his feel for the sea and the influences made on it by nature’s elements. He was obviously influenced in his early paintings by the Dutch tradition; this is apparent in the rather orderly treatment of wave formations. Later on, from about 1860, his style became looser and his seas more transparent but still showing remnants of the earlier method. Between 1848 and 1865 Knell showed his works at the Royal Academy, the Society of British Artists, & the British Institution.
