Description:
AN EARLY CYLINDRICAL MUG
English, Grainger & Co. Worcester, ca. 1810
Porcelain with cobalt blue ground, enamels, and gilding
This early cylindrical mug features a deep cobalt blue ground overlaid with intricate caillouté (marbled) gilding. The central gilt-edged panel depicts a sporting dog running on a river bank.
Founded by former Chamberlain painters Thomas Grainger and John Wood, the factory's early wares strongly reflect that style. The decoration on this piece was likely executed by Grainger or Wood themselves, acting as master enamellers in their new workshop.
