A FINE CHAMBERLAINS WORCESTER CUP AND COVER, CIRCA 1815.

A two handled cup and cover featuring a finely painted full colour vignette, depicting a scene from William Shakespeare’s tragedy Othello. Of elegant vase shape with a matching domed cover and decorative finial, lavishly decorated with gilt Neoclassical elements including lozenge (diamond shape) banding providing a frame for scrolling gilt anthemion (honeysuckle).Script reference under the cover  “Chamberlains Worcester” & Othello Oth: She swore in Faith, twas strange, twas passing strange, twas pitiful, twas wonderous pitiful. She wished she had not heard it, yet she wished That heaven had made her such a man. Act 1 Sc. 3 The combination of theatrical subjects with strict Neoclassical motifs—like the anthemion and lozenge—catered to the sophisticated tastes of the British nobility and the Prince Regent, who frequently commissioned services from the Worcester factory. This piece exemplifies the 19th-century fascination with the "Shakespeare Gallery," Narrative scenes from popular literature and plays like Othello were highly sought after, as they showcased the skill of the factory's master painters.
