Description:
A FINE FLIGHT BARR & BARR SPILL VSE, CIRCA 1815
An elegant and highly decorative early 19th-century Flight Barr & Barr spill vase, with a cylindrical body rising from a square plinth base to a gently flared rim, & white beaded collar & distinctive gilt bird’s head and ring handles. The body is centred with a finely painted full-length portrait panel depicting a contemplative male figure set within a landscape, inspired by Timon from Timon of Athens. An inscription reads: “Timon: Let me look back at thee,” referencing the character’s introspective and tragic narrative. The reverse is richly decorated with gilded neoclassical motifs reserved upon a deep blue & marbled ground, providing a striking contrast to the figural panel and further enhancing the vase’s opulent appearance. Full marks under referencing Flight & Barr’s Royal patronage. H: 5.25in
