Description:
An Exceptional and Rare Octagonal Table By George Bullock (c.1777–1818), George III Period, circa 1810
This remarkable table exemplifies the distinctive craftsmanship of George Bullock, one of the most original British cabinetmakers of the early 19th century. The finely figured mulberry wood top, now mellowed to a rich honey tone, is intricately inlaid with scroll and rosette motifs in brass and framed by a striking gadrooned ormolu edge. The octagonal top rests on a bold ebonized column, carved with a collar of lotus leaves and with beaded bands, on a concave sided plateau, leading to four sabre legs adorned with spiral brass and ebonized rosettes. Each leg terminates in fire-gilded bronze lion’s paw feet.
Rare and of exceptional quality, this table represents a masterwork of Regency design and British neoclassical ornamentation.
A closely related table by Bullock was supplied for Napoleon's use during his exile on St. Helena, as illustrated in
George Bullock: Cabinet Maker (John Murray & H. Blairman & Sons, 1988, p. 81).
