A FINE PAIR OF BARR FLIGHT BARR WORCESTER URNS & COVERS FROM A DESSERT SERVICE MADE FOR JOHN PRENDERGAST-Smythe, 1ST VISCOUNT GORT, CIRCA 1805-10. Each elegantly modelled and richly decorated in the neoclassical style, with gilding and refined ornament typical of the factory’s most prestigious commissions. The covers with a gilt flame finial and full colour family crest & motto: Vincit Veritas-Truth Prevails. Each with two oval gilt edged & superbly painted panels, one urn with sporting subjects, the other with flowers and shells. The vases are illustrated in Flight & Barr Worcester Porcelain, by Henry Sandon, page 77, plate 60. Height: 7.75 ins.
John Prendergast-Smyth, 1st Viscount Gort
(1742 – 23 May 1817).
Gort was a Colonel in the Limerick Militia and sat as a Member of the Irish House of Commons for Carlow from 1776 to 1783 and for Limerick City between 1785 and 1798. In 1810 he was raised to the Peerage of Ireland as Baron Kiltarton, of Gort in the County of Galway, and in 1816 he was further honoured when he was made Viscount Gort, also in the Peerage of Ireland.
