A FINE CHAMBERLAINS WORCESTER PORCELAIN BEAKER, CIRCA 1800

Description:

A FINE CHAMBERLAINS WORCESTER PORCELAIN BEAKER, CIRCA 1800

Painted by Thomas Baxter
Of inverted truncated-cone form, finely painted in polychrome with the classical subject of
Sappho and Phaon within an oval reserve to the front, the title inscribed beneath. The scene is derived from an engraving after Angelica Kauffman, published in 1794, and executed by Thomas Baxter, one of the factory’s most accomplished artists. The reverse with elegant neoclassical gilt decoration comprising rosettes and stars set against a wide pale salmon ground, with a band of gilt lozenges above and pendant festoons below, all finely tooled in gold.

Height: 3.5 in.

A closely related example is preserved in the Victoria and Albert Museum, ceramics collection (inv. no. C.540-1935). Pieces of this type reflect the strong influence of contemporary print sources on Worcester decoration and the high level of artistic ambition achieved at the Chamberlain’s factory around 1800.
