Barr, Flight & Barr Worcester Porcelain Dessert Dish

Imari “Fence” Pattern, circa 1810

A superb and highly decorative Regency-period dessert dish of scalloped square form, richly ornamented in the celebrated Imari “Fence” pattern. The surface is vividly painted in bright enamels and heightened with gilding, depicting an elaborate garden landscape featuring a pagoda, ornamental fence, leaning rockwork, and a bridge, animated by exotic birds.

The palette is characteristically vibrant, with bold reds, deep blues, fresh greens, and soft pinks, all skilfully combined to create a lively and harmonious composition. The intricate detailing and confident use of colour are further enhanced by finely applied gilt work, adding brilliance and depth to the design.

This pattern was first commissioned in 1811 by George IV, then Prince Regent, for use at the Royal Pavilion in Brighton, reflecting the period’s fascination with exotic and orientalising motifs. An outstanding example of Barr, Flight & Barr’s richly decorative wares, combining technical excellence with bold and imaginative design.
