Description:
A FINE EARLY 19TH CENTURY COALPORT PORCELAIN SPILL VASE
The vase features a neatly proportioned cylindrical body rising to a gently flared rim, supported by a spreading circular foot. Both the upper and lower sections are accentuated with delicate gilt bands, framing the design with a sense of balance and symmetry. At the rim and base, finely executed gilt wreath bands add a classical decorative touch, enhancing the overall richness. The central decorative zone is particularly striking: a wide band of brightly hand-painted flowers in polychrome enamels, stands out vividly against a solid gilt ground. Pattern number 656. Compact yet highly decorative, this spill vase would originally have been used to hold thin wooden tapers (“spills”) for lighting candles or lamps, while also serving as an elegant display piece.
